Yeah, me too. But the SL3 seems to perform very well - certainly better than the current 47Mp in the S1R. Not that the S1R is bad, but it’s notably worse at high ISO than the 24Mp sensors. The SL3 is much closer.

S5ii is really my end-game camera. I don't think I'll ever "need" anything else. An s1r would be a fun addition to the collection and the s1rii is probably going to be really enticing but I can't see justifying upgrading unless I just happened to stumble upon a bunch of money or Lumix decided to give me a review copy (hmm maybe I should become a YouTuber).
I think what the brand needs though is a high readout high res sensor to bring the brand reputation to a place of prominence in the broader camera community. An a7r competitor with Lumix video capabilities would give consumers more confidence that an investment in Lumix isn't a dead end and that a working pro could update their gear as their business grows and know that there are options keeping up with the quality their clients will increasingly demand.
I don't know that we'll be able to compete in the wildlife and sports arena anytime soon as the working pros in those industries are usually heavily invested in their brands who honestly have way more lens choices. To break into that market, you'd need significant investment to bring something novel and disruptive or just undercut the prices of the competition by a wide margin. I just can't see that happening unless they miraculously acquire some market breaking tech.
I think they'd have an easier time competing in the portrait and product sectors where you can market a look or some workflow tool. Lumix Labs and the s5ii/9 are a brilliant move in making a better user experience for getting your images on the web right away on multiple platforms. For in-house social media people, this is a big QoL feature

CMOS sensor tech seems to be diminishing returns as they eeek up mods or add-ons.
It could be 10 years for an affordable significantly different sensor tech, not CMOS plus more dependence upon software. Isn't baked in NR software going back 10 years or so in my Pentax K-30. Or was the add on NR accelerator chip both hardware for the software to run on? Are Leica are using such in SL3 for better noise? You'd need to compare SL3 and SR1 sensor tech sheets for clues.
