What are Sigma releasing on Friday the 8th of June?

I see Sigma have a new products (plural) announcement set for next Friday. Any chance they will be launching new products for the L-mount?

The question is, what focal length is missing in the current Sigma line up the most?

Sigma has 3 main lines:

  • Art
  • Contemporary
  • Sport

The Contemporary line has a subline called "i-series". All i-series lenses are Contemporary, but not all Contemporary lenses are i-series. Zoom lenses for example do not exist yet in the i-series line.

Here is the list for full-frame (="DG") L-Mount as of today. Only digital native ("DN") = designed for mirrorless cameras like L-Mount.

i-series

17/4.0 DG DN (new)
20/2.0 DG DN
24/2.0 DG DN
24/3.5 DG DN
35/2.0 DG DN
45/2.8 DG DN
50/2.0 DG DN (new)
65/2.0 DG DN
90/2.8 DG DN

Art

14/1.4 DG DN ART (rumor)
20/1.4 DG DN Art
24/1.4 DG DN Art
35/1.2 DG DN Art
35/1.4 DG DN Art
50/1.4 DG DN Art
85/1.4 DG DN Art
105/2.8 DG DN Art Macro

14-24/2.8 DG DN Art
24-70/2.8 DG DN Art
...?

Contemporary

16-28/2.8 DG DN
28-70/2.8 DG DN
...?

Sport
100-400/5-6.3 DG DN
60-600/4.5-6.3 DG DN
150-600/5-6.3 DG DN

For DSLRs there are even more different lenses availabe, so these will come too sooner or later. But what is missing in the current DG DN line up the most?

I think a 70-200/2.8 DG DN Contemporay or Art is missing. I put question marks at the gap within that line.

Personally, I would rather hope for a smaller and lighter tele-zoom. Less focal range and worse aperture than F2.8 to be able to make it smaller and lighter. Apart of that, there is nothing important really missing.

Maybe a 135/1.8 DG DN ART? Sounds expensive. How many will buy this?
A FFL with 28mm and/or 40mm?

My guess for 2023 would be (in that order):
  1. 70-200/2.8 (Art or Contemporary)
  2. A 28mm with F2.8 or F2.0
  3. A new 135/1.8 Art
  4. Smaller/lighter tele zoom with F4.5-5.6 (Contemporary)

Difficult to say. Sigma offers already a huge range of digital native lenses. Maybe a new camera? A new FP camera? I think for a Foveon sensor camera it is still too early.

Well we do have the 135 DG Art which is a hefty beast so maybe a 2.8 would be possible similar to the 90mm, but most definitely to me it is the 70-200 that is the missing piece of the puzzle.

70-210mm f2.8, 200mm f2.8. I'd be tempted by the former.

The 135mm f1.8 is a big, heavy, beautiful lens.

This is not a DG DN version. This is still the old DSLR version converted to L-Mount from 2017. I think 1.150kg and 82mm filter thread.

This is why I could imagine, that this will get a DG DN successor in 2023.

200mm f2.8.

I have never seen such a focal length in the Sigma repertoire yet. If they did not produce such a lens in the "old" DSLR times, it will be unlikely, that they will do that now in a shrinking market.

A minor correction. The 100-400 DG DN is a contemporary lens, not a sport.

My guess would be the 70-200 f2.8 will probably also become a sport, like the existing DSLR Version. Maybe there will also be a 70-180 f2.8 contemporary Version. The 70-200 from Sigma is probably the most awaited lens from Sigma for L- and E-Mount customers alike.

Personally I hope also for a light weight 28mm f2 or f2.8 and 135mm f2.8 or f3.5. Both could be realistic, I think.

The 500mm F4 Sport could also be a contender for a DG DN Version.

Sigma offered a 2.8/180 long time ago.

But I would also love to see a i-series 2.8/135
