A trip to Glencoe

Ha, ha. I could live with just the 24-105 and the 14-28. Anyone want to buy a 70-300? I went to Scotland and took over 400 photos, but just 11 with the 70-300. And of the 11, only two are keepers - taken at 70mm !
I've yet to go on a decent hike and have nice landscapes to try the S5ii 24-105, I've been out on coat waljs but nothing worth photographing locally, unlike where you are.

I would use the 70-300 a lot more than you, it's more useful if you walk up to the summits and photograph across at others, for distant subjects or looking down. There are more opportunities for compression photography when you go up.

Glencoe could have been a good opportunity for you to try astro landscapes, the 24-105 is quite good for it also, I seen some good MW images with it at f4, obviously faster is better but the IQ was goid wide open without any massive astigmatism or coma ruining the stars as I could see.

I'm now feeling guilty not using this S5ii yet, going out for a coast walk here but no point taking it out for Belfast Lough on a dreary rainy day. Sometimes you can do stuff with the distant docks with sunbeams piercing through lower clouds but not today, again I'd need the 70-300 for this from 10 miles away.

It's actually useful to only bring out the 70-300 on days as it can teach how to become a longer focal length photographer and get you out of the wider angle rut, many times looking at others photos I would visually crop them for what would be better images.

No, I will resist. I am strong. I do not want to buy this heavy, oversized 24-105/F4...

LoL but I don't think so, yes it replaced my small Pentax 20-40mm APSC lens but with a massive increase in range and if you want the highest IQ then it's worth it.

Overall the S5ii, 24-105 & 70-300 is lighter than my Pentax APSC kit was covering the same focal lengths.

That's why I took the 100mm f/2.8 to Las Vegas. I love wide angle, but I wanted to break that habit a little. The 70-300mm would be too much for Las Vegas in the city, but I did really like what I got with the 100mm.

Do you shoot a lot multi exposures or mostly just single shots ? . I love this series. Epic photos
I do frequently resort to bracketed exposures to deal with the DR. But none of the above are. The interior shots of the church are 5-shot brackets -2 to +2 EV and then stacked in LR.

Ah but you need the light and you got the light, actually the best you could hope for and then some, but you were there waiting!

What a beautiful place, when are they building that bridge across to Scotland? :D

That 24-105 again, a guy on dpreview said this in a thread: "Panasonic's 24-105 is hidious bad in my opinion."

I got my Marumi DHG polariser for it today, not sure if you use one or not.

Are you using a Lee ND1000? There used to be a waiting list for Lee 'Big Stoppers' years ago but plenty of others make them now, good ones are expensive.

Wasn’t the bridge one of Boris‘s fantasies? Given how broke the UK is now, I can’t see it happening.

It’s not one of those lenses where you go “wow” when you look at images at 200%, but it’s by no means a bad lens. In fact, I reckon it’s as good as similar standard zoom lenses from other manufacturers. I’m very happy with images from it. It’s got a great focal length range, excellent stabilisation, really good IQ even wide open, semi macro capability, weather sealing, and solid build. As a workhorse lens for many genres, it’s hard to beat really. I suspect both the Sigma and Panasonic 24-70 f2.8 options are optically better, but they’ve got shorter range and are bigger and heavier. Choose your poison!

I’m using Urth screw in filters at present. They are perfectly fine and don’t cost a fortune. Next time there’s a decent sale on them, I’ll probably buy the magnetic versions to avoid the fiddly job of swapping them in the field.

Yes just further a tide of BS, anybody with a brain cell here laughed at this.

From the little so far I've used it I find it fantastic, at 105mm it matched my Pentax F*300 f4.5 around 2m distance with my cider can test, I think I posted the results on dpreview or here, can't remember... Hic:D

It had similar rendering too, I didn't expect this as the Pentax lens was regarded as one of their best back.in the day from their top range * line-up. The Sigmas may look more clinical but I prefer the rendering from the 24-105 going by yours and others work in landscapes. The colours and bokeh also top notch so I literally am delighted with it and it's worth it for the macro alone above the rest.

I seen Wex selling those, I don't know who makes them, where they came from but I'm uber fussy about filters. I've used the top line Marumi and Hoya CPLs before, Lenstip have tests for filters including samples with and without. Flare, ghosting and colour cast I avoid at all costs. I bought a used 77mm Marumi DHG CPL recently, not top of the range but Lenstip shows little difference in performance with the exception of 1/3 stop difference in transmission and no antistatic repellent coating. I've already tested it and seems excellent so for £18.50 it was immaculate and a bargain.

I think Urth is just a brand of Gobe.

Great photo Paul.

You really cleaned up on your trip!
