Doing stuff and other things ... Phoenix, Arizona

Hello! My name is Joe (or Joseph, if you're my mom or a government agency, but let's stick with Joe).

My life story is thrillingly generic: I was, in fact, born quite recently — yesterday, if you consider the span of geological time — and eventually grew up. I went to a big university to absorb a lot of knowledge, which naturally led me to my current occupation: working for a company and doing stuff.

In the (sadly limited) time I'm not doing stuff, I enjoy doing other things, like photography. I'll likely inflict some of those photos, thoughts, and opinions on you all here. I hope to keep this whole "doing stuff and other things" arrangement going for quite a long time ...

Currently, I'm doing all of the aforementioned activities from my home base in Phoenix, Arizona. Yes, that's in the desert where it frequently gets hot — specifically, during the summer, which is approximately a nine-month affair here. Doing stuff or other things is significantly less enjoyable when it feels like standing on the surface of the sun, but you learn to adapt. The upside? Our winters are basically a polite nod to cold weather, and we have stunning cactus and palm trees. So, it's not all bad!

My photo journey has been a bit like a camera brand tasting menu over the years. I started with film (Minolta, then Nikon — the old-school cool), went digital with Nikon, then flirted with Fuji, Canon, and Sony.

Last year I began a passionate and continuing affair with the tiny, mighty M4/3 system with the Panasonic Lumix G9II (which is a gem!), proclaiming, "I'm done with bulky Full Frame!"

... Famous last words.

Turns out, I have an incurable weakness for small, manual vintage glass (I like my images to have character, not perfection). So, I've officially crawled back into the Full Frame pool, lured by the Panasonic Lumix S5II and its sweet-sounding features (and the promise of a relatively easy transition).

I'm now rocking the S5II with the Lumix 35 / 50 / 85 S f/1.8 primes and planning to mix in some of that beautiful, imperfect old glass (or even some newer all-manual glass ... ). My lovely and trusted G9II will stick around for zoom (and exploring video) duties where it excels.

Thrilled to be here on the L-MOUNT Forum to learn (I'm an expert lurker, but I promise to try and chime in!) and share the triumphs and inevitable oops moments as I get comfortable with the new kit.

See you around!

joe

Welcome Joe. I like your life story. Lots of wisdom accumulated there. Amazing really since you were only born yesterday! ;)

Looking forward to engaging with you as you continue your L Mount journey.

Greetings! Glad to see you here, and glad to see another manual lens enthusiast. :) Have you checked out the Share Your Photos with Legacy Lenses thread yet?

Looking forward to seeing pics from Phoenix. I was there once for a developer conference, in 2005, but didn't have much time to take pics. Might get more opportunity in the future; I recently interviewed for a 12-month contract job in Mesa, we'll see if anything comes of it.

Thanks, Travis!

The thread you mention is one of the first deep dives I've done on the forum, and I know you're quite active here. I really enjoy your images and perspective — it's a great bonus that many of your photos are from my hometown!

I haven't had a chance to properly "see the sights" in Kansas City in years. My infrequent visits are usually just for catching up with friends, but I hope to prioritize some dedicated sightseeing at some point.

The desert offers a very different set of photo opportunities. I am sure you will find much to love spending time in Mesa as a base. Good luck with the opportunity!

Thanks again for the warm welcome. I am looking forward to ramping up my activity here and starting to share some of my own photos!

Welcome!
I've been close to PHX in the past; spent some work-time in Tempe, every so often over the past decade or so, prior to a pandemic-enforced retirement. Is the ChuckBox burger joint still open, there by ASU campus?

The ASU Chuckbox is THE BEST and it’s still around … a favorite!

That is GREAT news. I loves me a Big One with Cheese.
In an earlier lifetime, I used to travel as part of the road crew on traveling Broadway shows and concert tours. I've played your Gammage Auditorium several times over the years, and holed up in the old Twin Palms (now the Graduate) hotel across the street.
