Hi from England

I'm a collectors of old film cameras but also love digital and have just bought the iconic Leica T..... A beautiful L Mount camera. I have a TT Artisan 35mm 1.4 MF and recently bought a Panasonic 18-40 AF which doesn't seem to like my T. If this turns out to be incompatible I will be looking for another silver wide angle AF lens to go with it. Any suggestions?
Best wishes Chris

Welcome Chris. Where in England are you?

In the East if England . Spalding Lincolnshire. Very flat lands about 30 miles from the sea.
I lived briefly near to Peterborough back in the 90s so know the general area. Some good sea scenes in the right weather!

Interesting that the 18-40 is incompatible with the Leica T. That shouldn’t be the case. How does the problem manifest itself?

The camera shows an error requiring update. My T is firmware 1.9 which I think is the last one, but my email to Leica hasn't been answered sadly.

Leica "T" mount, is made several years earlier than the later "L-mount".
As a start for the L-mount alliance, I can imagine the other members (other brands) of the alliance
don't take into account, more old specifications of the "T" mount of Leica.
So there is always a possibility e.g. the AF electronics and control of aperture, of a newly L-mount lens of another brand, doesn't support Leica T.

Besides the AF of Leica T seems very bad. Found a web-story 2022 about the Leica T.
However "Sigma APS-C" -- L-mount lenses seems to do a better job in combination to the Leica T.
At least these lenses do work. - AF functions seems to be bad by the poor AF functions of the Leica T camera itself.

Hi and welcome. Yes, sadly Leica were a bit naughty and just stopped firmware updates for the T line far too soon. I have the TL2 and that didn't even get the same firmware updates
that the CL got, so no aperture ring control with L mount Sigma Contemporary lenses and compatibility problems with some of the Panasonic lenses. Obviously the 18TL is the standout option at the wide end for the T but even used still quite a price, black and silver available. I believe Sigma will be offering the 24mm 3.5 Contemporary in Silver, again no aperture ring control though. Best one lens and done for the T would be the Leica TL 18-56 but not available in black.

There are other, better ones (in silver) ...

To pay such money, and endure awkward limitations of this camera, one needs really to be after the unique look of images produced by T model.
Yes, I know, the 35/60 TL both come in silver and black, I still have the 35 1.4 TL which is a great lens, but comes at a heftier price used or new than the 18mm, and @Nogbad was asking about a wide angle autofocus lens.

I'm not sure how unique the images are from the T, after all it is just a 16 megapixel aps-c body, but it is a pretty unique UI and feel in the hand, I'm really sorry Leica abandoned it's aps-c line.

Loving all the comments thanks. I picked the T as a modern classic and it certainly is great in the hand. I usually shoot with my Fuji X100VI but have 1960s Leica M2 and M3 to play with as well.
Leica have just replied that my firmware 1.9 is the latest and last version and they haven't been told of any incompatibility issues with the Panasonic 18-40, suggesting I contact them to see if the lens needs a firmware update. Is this possible?

Thanks again for any advice.

That's an interesting response from Leica, pass the buck to Panasonic :D .

I haven't used or handled the 18-40 but looking at reviews it seems you have to rotate the lens (extend) to activate autofocus, it doesn't operate at its smallest size. I have the Sony 28-60 that works the same way. I get a message on the camera body when using that lens that reminds me to extend it for shooting. So, just a thought, you haven't forgotten to extend the lens have you?
