I have the 18-40mm lens and like it. I don't use it a whole lot, but when I want to carry something smaller than the 24-60mm it is good to have. I used it for some helicopter shots a couple months ago and it worked well in the cramped cockpit. It might even work in a glider. :)
 
If I didn't already have the Lumix 14-28mm, 18mm f1.8 and Lumix 20-60mm I'd be pretty tempted too. I really really don't need another wide-ultrawide. Someone somewhere must have got a hold of a stack of the 18-40's, there's a few eBay sellers flicking them in the mid to high $500 Au range.
 
Last vacation I found myself to my big suprise hitting the road with my 18-40 on the S9 and the 70-300 in the bag. I thought the 18-40 would be that kit-lens that would gather dust until the S9 being sold again "with kitlens". Well, in real life the 18-40 seems to be a useful little thing.
 
The thing is, I have the 20-60 which is just superb. My copy is every bit as good as any other zoom I have so I’ve no complaints about its performance. Sure, the 18-40 is smaller, but since the smallest body I have is an S5, it’s really no advantage overall having a smaller lens. So, despite the price, I’m giving it a pass.

If I had an S9 then it would be another story. But as per endless posts I’ve made on that subject, I won’t be getting one!
 
If I had a 20-60 I would'nt buy the 18-40...

Maybe Panasonic is trying to sell more 18-40 than originally planned to Europe at a lower price to equalize the tarriffs in the US and with this the dropping demand for China manifactured lenses?

I bought my 18-40 as a replacement for all my wide angle zooms below 28mm. I basically never use wider than 28mm. With the small and light 18-40, I always have a backup with me, just in case that I would need once in a year wider than 28mm. Since I bought it, this did not happen yet. :)

I've really taken to my Lumix S 18mm f1.8. Combined with my Sigma 28-70mm f2.8. The Siggy makes a brilliant, high quality, very versatile general purpose lens, for all lighting situations. When I want to go wide, it's generally wiiiiiiiide. 18mm is wide enough for me the majority of the time, I actually don't think I've used my 14-28mm since I got the 18mm f1.8. Because Aperture. I'm really quite enamored with the ultrawide shallow DOF look you can get out of it (the 18mm f1.8). If I didn't have the Lumix 14-28mm, I'd be really tempted.

I'd be tempted by a cheap 18-40mm to get a small lens if it weren't for the upcoming TTArtisans 40mm f/2 which should be pretty small too and is more my sort of lens.
