While divesting of my S gear to fund surgery expenses, I was offered an a7.3 at a chill price. Yay, a system with small 3rd party primes actually available and not just shipping AnyDayNow.
I picked up body, 28-60 and Viltroxi 20+40.. and..

Ugh.
I can honestly say the alphas are technically proficient at making full frame images. For myself i can honestly say: I'm bored. Just two aspect ratios and my two least favorite. No out of cam Wow! shots like the s5 provided. Wrong, wrong.

I'm back to plan A by selling out of ff and will enjoy my e-M1b while medical bills are worked out. Then it's back to Lumix S in some form! Maybe by then those s9-scale small lenses will be more than press releases..

Hi Jim. Sorry to hear about your medical expenses and I hope that your health improves.

I've heard similar comments from others about Sony cameras. One YouTuber I watch referred to his Sony A7RV as "soulless" and lacked character but also said that it takes very good images. I've never used one so I don't quite understand but it's interesting nonetheless.

Yes, it would be good to see a few pancake style autofocus lenses for the S9. It's possible that Samyang or TTArtisan may release smaller AF L-mount lenses first.

I thought I wanted them. The trouble is, my Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 has spoiled me, because it's so good, and so damn convenient. And I say that as a dyed in the wool, card carrying, self confessed prime lover. Yeah, F2-F2.8 are going to be smaller and lighter than my 28-70, but it's hard to ignore that convenience factor.
I'm kind of understanding why L mount has not showed any urgency in developing and releasing them, as I think they've become quite niche and specialist.
Don't get me wrong here, I still want to see them happen, I'll more than likely pick up a 35-40mm myself, but I'm certainly in no rush.

Sigma makes some really great gear. That lens of yours is compact and light for a f/2.8.

I'm very much a zoom lens guy especially when using the S5II and on the S9 I am finding the 18-40mm to be great as it's compact and very light weight. But I would still like a true pancake lens that is autofocus, similar in size to the 26mm f/8 lens.

I've never shot Sony, but your experience has been conveyed a number of times in a number of different places, that I've stumbled across.
Personally, I'm rather gear agnostic, what I have noticed is that it's the evangelistic fanboi zealots that do more to turn me off a particular brand or format, than the gear itself. True fact.
In saying that however, I'm rather partial to my Panasonic gear. For me, it just works. Fits my hands nicely making it comfortable to actually shoot with, seems very reliable and well built, and as you've noted, this makes it thoroughly enjoyable to go out and create images with.
Which leads me to my S5 classic. Yeah, classic. I think that's a very apt descriptor for the camera. Suits it in every sense I think. As a non-video shooter, I find the AF more than adequate. For static, and moving subjects. I shoot both. It works. I'm never going to try and shoot birds flying. In the last 50 years I've had zero interest, I can't see that changing, so any deficiencies there are of no concern to me. Give it something of reasonable size in the EVF, it simply nails it. In one shot.
The sensor is a gem. 24MP is plenty for anything I want to do with the files. The colours are beautiful. Dynamic range superb. AF is fast and deadly accurate. Personally the only reason I could see someone wanting better, is if they're a Pro or advanced sports/action shooter. Or videographer.
Now before anyone accuses me of being a blind, one eyed zealot, there's a few little things that could be improved. The EVF. Nothing wrong with the size or resolution, the Eye point could just be a little bit longer for Eye glass wearers. That's it for that.
Writing speed. I've tried a couple of different cards, it just seems a bit tardy to me. Well, I'm not sure exactly what's going on, but I've only ever noticed it when trying to zoom in to review a shot, straight after it's been taken. I'm no expert in those matters, I could more than likely be wrong there.
That's about all the negatives I can think of, and really, if you stop and think about the price point, it's not that big of an issue. The camera is a bargain. A fair dinkum, screaming bargain. I freaking love mine, in case you hadn't yet guessed. Good shooting to you all :)
