*** May 2026 Image & Video Thread ***

As I’ve posted in the past, I live about 15 miles east of Boulder, which is itself nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. I say this because while it's not uncommon to see wildlife - like bears and cougars - wander into Boulder, it's a bit more rare (but not unheard of) out where I live in Erie.

Anyway, on Tuesday evening there were posts about a black bear in a nearby town that was just a few miles south of my home. Then on Wednesday, there were reports of him lumbering through Erie, finally parking himself in a tree for an afternoon rest, again only a few miles from my house, but this time to the north. Somebody put the location on FB, so I decided to see if I could catch a few shots. Here's my fav, with him looking right at me, and, well, drooling. Hmmmm. Time for me to go, I suppose.

It looks like the local CBS news channel is going to show the image tonight; we shall see.

Teh bear... hungers. ^_-

He’s still being spotted. Seems to be headed west now, which is towards the foothills, which is a good thing. Hopefully there are no bad interactions with humans and he is allowed to disappear back into the woods. Might get there tomorrow at this pace.

Wow, an amazing shot George!

Good to see you were at 600mm. With a black bear staring at me and drooling I'd have wanted at least 1200mm.

LOL. I was at least somewhat uncomfortable, particularly when I zoomed in on the image while I was still standing there, and I realized it was staring right at me. There’s no doubt that had it decided it didn’t want me there, I would have been helpless. But, it’s a black bear which are not as likely to attack humans as, say, brown or grizzly bears. But still.

Well, it was a brave photo to take for sure. It looks huge!

I am sure that I am overdue to post a railway themed photo. :D

These two photos are of Albury railway station, a heritage listed building located on the NSW / Victoria state border. The station opened in 1882 and is located 642km south west of Sydney and 305km north east of Melbourne.

Fun fact: Albury station is one of the largest regional stations on the rail network because it was historically a major “break‑of‑gauge” point. When the railways reached Albury in the early 1880s - from Sydney in the north and Melbourne in the south - each state had built its network to a different gauge. New South Wales used standard gauge (4 ft 8½ in), while Victoria used broad gauge (5 ft 3 in). As a result, passengers travelling between the two capitals were required to change trains at Albury and the station’s very long covered platform was built to handle the heavy interchange of passengers. This arrangement lasted until 1962 when the standard‑gauge line was finally extended all the way to Melbourne.

This is the road side of Albury railway station, taken about 15 minutes before sunset.

This shot was taken rail side from the middle of the platform looking south, showing the tracks on either side that used to handle the exchange of passengers for the break of gauge. These days the tracks on both sides are standard gauge and the station is a much quieter location.

I am sorry to ask, George, but do they buy the picture? Or do they offer something besides the credits? I am just curious...
No, just credits.

I’m not even sure if they used it - I watched some of the evening broadcasts, and I think I lost out to a video of a beaver that was sitting in the middle of a crosswalk, LOL. They might have used it in the later broadcast but I didn’t stay up for it.

Need to remember to shoot a short video as well during these “public interest” type opportunities.
