Last week, Panasonic has registered two new models in China.

One of them is a Bluetooth only registration, usually for lower end cameras. That could be a Compact camera, but also a small m43 camera.

The other one is a Dual Band registration, like all Panasonic S cameras with L-Mount, but also like the G9II and GH7. Personally I don't expect a new high end m43 camera, considering that the G9II and GH7 are still solid. I rather expect some new L-Mount camera. I could imagine some S9 successor or a S9 with built in view finder, a S5II successor or a S1HII. What do you think?
 
An S9ii with a EVF and usable hot shoe would be money. Maybe due to their working relationship with Leica they didn't want to go that route the first time but with Leica up on the selling block just maybe they'll step up. It would give them a real winner with the photography first crowd.

A also think a GX9 would go over very well. The used market for the GX80/85, GX8 & GX9 is just crazy high right now.
 
P2303A can be safely discarded: that's the S1RII V1 with the 60mp sensor from the Leica SL3. So two cameras in play. I am assuming it's the S1HII and then something more entry or casual, probably fixed lens. Considering how some of the compacts are Lumix' bestsellers, it's not going to be a surprise to me.
I would hope for a S9II with a mechanical shutter/hotshoe, but I believe that to be highly unlikely.

I agree, these are two of the three things the S9 desperately needs (the other being a mechanical shutter).

Apparently Nikon are going to soon bring out an S9-like camera "designed for photographers", although it also lacks a viewfinder so it's clearly not designed for photographers at all. It's apparently very thin so probably lacks a mechanical shutter too, though that could be a valid choice if the sensor reads out fast enough.

What would be the point of such a Nikon camera, the existing Nikon ZR in mind? I know, the ZR is branded video oriented, but I don't think it's worse as a photo camera then the S9.

Well supposedly it's thinner which always is a plus and the cost would be less without all the advanced video options included. The only thing they would need to to with a new camera like this is come out with some smaller sized primes, or come to an agreement with Sigma to allow their lenses to be used. A camera like this with small lenses would be a huge hit.

It was due to Panasonic wanting to target SNS users, particularly those who hadn’t used a camera before.

There were a fair few interviews that Panasonic executives like Keita Tsuji and Toshiyuki Tsumura did, which discussed the design decisions behind the S9 that explained it was intended as an entry-level camera, particularly aimed people who had only used smartphones to take pictures. Tsuamura, who made the decision not to have an EVF, for instance, said people being used to using a phone screen to compose.

The bulk of these interviews were in Japan and in one or two, noticed that people invited to press events for the camera included those who covered fashion or lifestyle, rather than cameras.

I subsequently watched quite a lot of YouTube videos by Japanese reviewers or influencers - and what Panasonic said about the intended audience, really came across.

In one interview with a Panasonic executive, it was mentioned that around the Camel Orange variant was launched (this coincided with the 18-40mm coming out), one third of S9 buyers were buying a camera for the first time, whilst 60% (it might have been two-thirds, I can’t remember) of purchasers were 31 years or younger. I have no idea how this aligns with the company’s expectations but bearing what had been said in interviews, it didn’t seem too shabby.

Something that was mentioned that keeping the size down was a priority and that was going to be a factor in what was going to be left out. I have a S9 and a S5 II and the difference in size comes down to the EVF bump and the grip - adding a decent EVF, mechanical shutter, hotshoe etc would come with a larger size and price point.

That was pretty much the point that The Hybrid Shooter made - if you want that, Panasonic will happily sell you that camera.

He also made a fair point that if an EVF had been included, it would likely have been on the small side, which he doesn’t care for.

As per my post above, keeping the size down was a priority - and it meant leaving some stuff out… someone was bound to be disappointed!

This argument falls flat for me because one of the things I think people want when upgrading from a phone to a real camera is a viewfinder. It was down to size and cost.

I think Nikon already have more small-ish primes than the L-mount does, but Sony is really the only system with a good variety of them.
 
I do not think that we will ever see a S9 with EVF, because it would be too much competition for the Leica Q and EV line.

If there would be one nevertheless, I would strongly consider to buy one.

If it would be a MFT camera, I am not sure anymore. I feel it is kind of too late for this.

IMHO, over the last 2 years Panasonic drove MFT into the ground with all its hesitation and no firm commitment for smaller bodies and improved lens designs. It is a shame...

I 100% agree. I have a Nikon Zf which I love and replaced my S5 because it just didn't excite me. I was hoping the S9 would be photocentric but Panasonic went another route. I also agree that they've give up on M43 but that being said I'll be holding onto my GX85 with the Panasonic/Leica 15mm f1.7 lens. It's a great small package for when I don't want a bigger camera.
 
Maybe one of these will be the small m43 body that people have been asking for but then it wouldn't surprise me if they do an S9 on it - no VF, no shutter etc.

Maybe an updated G100. Apparently they sell like hotcakes. I really like both of mine, lots of people crying out for IBIS though
