Later that same day we did a quick stop at Civita di Bagnoregio, but decided only to few it from a distance. It was extremely hot and we still had to drive a few hundred kilometres, and the next day we would visit Pompeii and Vesivius. So we canceled the city walk. Was a nice walk to the viewpoint though, which was already sweaty at 38 celsius.

Vesuvius climb: this was awesome. Because of the height the heat was less, and it was nice and windy... I think just a mild 27 celsius on the top... with 38 in Pompeii.

The next day we drove along the Amalfi coast, bypassing Sorento due to time restrictions as we were driving to Rome. One of my craziest drives in Italy. It's very windy, very small, and in the villages along the coast where cars can barely pass each other there are still scooters zig-zagging in between. My son firmly believed that we would have an accident before the road ended in Sorento, but everything was fine... as he has only his drivers license for 5 months... he passed on this drive, so I could enjoy the driving myself. And what a drive it was... highly recommended! Because it was so small and tight and busy there were almost nog places to stop or park the car... so not too many pictures.

That's all folks... Hope you enjoyed them as much as I had taking them... it is only a small batch of the pictures I took the past weeks.

These were great!

Do you have an album posted somewhere with the full set?

Thanks!! Really enjoyed the trip with my son.
And no.. I have not everything up in an online album.

Wonderful shots. It brings back memories of an Italy trip we did as a family when the kids were about 8 and 10 years old. But we went in the Autumn (Oct) and spent most of the time in Tuscany so the weather wasn't too hot. In fact, temperatures were ideal and the light in Tuscany in Oct is just sublime.

Actually, with global warming accelerating at its current pace, I think there is a distinct possibility that a lot of Southern Europe will become deserts within the next century.

As regards your comments on lenses... I think the 24-105 is really an excellent travel lens. Paired with the 14-28 it makes a great two lens combo that covers pretty much most travel needs. If one lens is the requirement, then the 20-60 is probably what I'd take. The lack of reach of the 24-105 I can probably work around, but I do find that 24mm is often too narrow when doing shots in and around towns and cities.

With a high res sensor the 20-60 would probably be a nice sunny 16 lens in these conditions. But with less cropping room for the 24mp I opt for the 24-105 any day. 35 to 60 is not that much difference and the 16-35 is much better then the 20-60.
35 is often enough for *me*.
