News Sigma 20-200mm f3.5/6.3 DG

I'm not writing it off yet but I won't be surprised if it comes up a bit too short in terms of sharpness across the frame. From what I have seen so far it looks like it's most compromised at the wide end in the corners. I guess there is always the possibility that it would improve enough zoomed in slightly to be useable for landscape. I'm waiting for more representative shots before I decide to try one though.

If it works as a decent 24-200 then I'd be happy.
 
Yes a good 24-200 would work for me too.
 
I downloaded some of the example images from DPR's site. I think there's some cause for hope. But it needs some much better samples than these to properly establish its performance.
 
And this review by Gordon Laing (on an S1Rii) is also pretty positive:



He does his usual diagonal shooting of the Brighton seascape and even in the corners it performs pretty well.

Yes I agree but I would also like to examine the images that he posts on his website. It could be some while though because understandably he focusses on knocking out his comprehensive video reviews first.

Yes, I agree. There are very few sample images available at the moment. Guess we need to be patient.

Hard to really look very closely on a video, but those test crops at the end do look encouraging.

Agreed. From what I could make out, 20mm between f/5.6 and f/8 looks to be reasonable and 200mm between f/8 and f/11 also looks decent.

I hope you don't mind, if you do let me know & I'll delete them all, but I quickly ran a few through darktable with my normal settings, nothing fancy in the slightest, & this is what I got. The lens is definitely better at the longer focal lengths than 20mm that's for sure. It's not terrible @ 20mm, it's just better elsewhere. 200mm looks rather good to my eye. Click for full sized images. Slowed my little mini PC down they did :) I know why I like my 24MP camera :)

Nice find.
Quite a few good examples at 20mm f/8 in that album. They're pretty well defined from sharpness point of view in corners however some do look like they may have been cropped. Never the less some useful examples there.

You can see the 20mm shots have been over-sharpened, lots of halo's and artifacts visible. Noticeably so compared to the other focal lengths.

Well spotted, yes they do look a bit over sharpened. Still it's looking a pretty good lens given it's a x10 zoom.
