Used Lumix 24-105/4 in London

I saw this and thought there might be someone interested here as it seems a good price as long as it's all working well. There's a no-quibble returns period of 14 days for anyone who wants to buy online, of course if you go and inspect it you can check if it's working OK and make sure it doesn't have any blue fogging or anything.

Blue fogging? Is that a thing?

Oh dear.

Blue fogging, dust and white spots are the main QC weak points in Lumix S lenses. Best guess is that the blue fogging is caused by some component (in the glue perhaps) slowly evaporating and condensing on the surfaces of the lens elements within the lens. It can be seen by shining a light in one end of the lens and looking in the other. If you look without the light at the other end then it won't be visible.

It was thought to have been corrected in newer lenses but now I'm not so sure, so best to always check. All three of my Lumix lenses suffered from it and were replaced by Panasonic, two within warranty and the other not (20-60mm, 50/1.8 and 16-35/4).

Apart from the usual softness, AF functionality, de-centring etc these are the things you need to check for when buying a Lumix S lens, especially if it's older and/or used.

What impact does it show on images?
I'm not sure but have read that it worsens over time. The lenses I bought with my S5 were exchanged after I'd had them for about a year and a half, by that time it was visible but had no effect on images that I could see.

Checked my three Panasonic lenses by shining light trough it.
None of them do have a blue fogging, but the one of the inner lenses of the 24-105mm/F4.0 do have relatively much very tiny dust spots, by the light is shining on it.
I think the lens parts near the aperture blades, as this "compartment" has an open connection to the more outer mechanical aperture parts.
Also while this 24-105 lens do have a wide "pumping" effect changing zoom range from wide angle to tele.
The inner "volume" is sucked by air from outside, and can take dust particles, in spite it is dust and weather proof.

My Lumix 16-35mm/F4 also no blue fogging at all. And also nearly totally free from dust. (Nearly no "zoom" pumping effect).
The cleanest seems my Lumix 85mm/F1.8 lens.

Checked my Sigma lenses to. They all are very clean and dust free.
But more difficult to see, as the lenses just taken separate within the hand, the aperture is closed to a certain value.
And typical the Panasonic lenses all are opened, to the most wide aperture value.

I knew about the white spots problem, but the blue fogging is new to me. My 24-105 shows some dust/white bits when shining a light through, but it’s not too bad and so far as I can judge it’s no worse than other lenses I’ve had in the past. I think it’s usual to see some dust no matter what.
