Will we ever see an S9 with an EVF?

I had a short dialogue with Matt at Lumix UK on FB:

Yes Matt - thanks. If you have any input to the product planning, what I would say is that I'd buy an S9 with an EVF in a heartbeat!

Would be great to see Panasonic give the A7Cii / A7Cr a run for its money!

Hi Paul,Understood! We have seen a lot of similar thoughts and has all been sent on 1f44d_1f3fb.png

I'll keep my fingers crossed then! 1f642.png

Ahahah! Don't cross them too hard though!

Hardly a promise, but maybe a chink of light?

of course there will be

If anything, my impression is that Panasonic is doggedly slow. 2-3y ago everyone assumed they would abandon m43 or at best only do a GH. Many postulated they would drop out of FF entirely. Or at least never ever doa S1R successor. Just video centric. None of this happened. In fact, if you look back now, its astonishingly predictable. Only the S9 is a bit newish and different what some hoped for.

Long way to say: by now I assume they’ll eventually get there when everyone else has moved on but get there they will :)

Also would not be surprised if Leica adds an L Mount Rangerinnen Style. Maybe we get a LX/Dlux situation?

Yes, that's a good conclusion based on the evidence. But how long did it take Sony to bring out the Rx1R mk iii?

Interesting idea. Almost out-BF the BF !

Maybe I am approaching this from a "glass half empty" perspective but I doubt there will be a S9M2 with an EVF, mechanical shutter and a hot shoe. There were complaints about the price of the S9 without these features so imagine the price if Panasonic included them.

I believe this is why Panasonic has not continued the m4/3 GM or GX camera lines - not enough people are willing to pay a price that justifies making them. Sean at LUMIX USA has said as much a number of times. And if Panasonic removes features to make the camera more affordable, people complain about that too. The little G100 gets is always criticised for not having IBIS.

And just about everyone carries a smartphone that is pocketable and which takes decent photos in any kind of light, so I think the days of small fully featured cameras is long gone. Cameras are for enthusiasts, not the masses, and enthusiasts want lots of features. It's easier to build everything enthusiasts want into a bigger body with better heat dissipation, space for a larger battery, etc.

But how long did it take Sony to bring out the Rx1R mk iii?

And it has a relatively poor EVF, a fixed rear LCD, a fixed lens and it costs a lot of money too! I think that camera is a folly.

I think I agree. It's actually a backward step from the RX1R ii in my opinion.

Adding a viewfinder would be a good step up for a future camera based on the S9 but it would still only fix one of the two glaring omissions, leaving it still without a shutter. And that's not to mention weather sealing, a hotshoe and a decent grip. Put all the important stuff back in and you've got an S5II, so just buy that.

The RX1R III should have been a great camera but it needs a re-designed lens, a flexible screen, IBIS and to be at least $1K cheaper. There's no need for it to have a 61MP sensor, I'm sure that drives up the price. Basically they needed to make it a FF X100 but, being Sony, they messed it up.

Honestly I think Panasonic should make one with all the problems fixed and I'm convinced they could do it for at least $1K less. Get the vintage styling right and it could be a runaway success.
