Lumix S1Rii & sports photography - AF settings, burst modes etc.

Another point I forgot to mention:

Yesterday, I tried the hybrid zoom feature too. Originally I thought that this feature starts only once you are at the end of your telezoom range. With my Sigma 100-400 this would be after 400mm.

But in reality, the hybrid zoom feature kicked in more or less immediately. Already at the shorter end of the telezoom range. I found this confusing for my use case, because I often shoot with cropping later in mind, but with hybrid zoom, there would be sometimes not enough pixel left to cropp in.

I will try next time the other feature called "crop-zoom" to see when this will kick in.

update for the S1RII sport AF experience.

Today was a field hockey game. This time I used the Sigma 70-200/2.8 DG DN OS Sports.

It went really well. AF tracking was really good. Even in very difficult situations, when one player was crossed by one or several player.

I choose these images below to demonstrate extreme situations, when you sometimes have first the body, but later only the head is left for the AF to track. But it worked.

The easier tracking without someone crossing the playe went also well.

I will share later on my settings. For this AF performance alone, the S1RII was worth it. The ability to crop afterwards into the image helps a lot to make the images more dramatic.

Only with helmets, it seems to have sometines problems, as you can see on the next inage. The AF focused on the background. But maybe I was too slow to catch the helmet/body with the AF focus field.

Overall, I am very satisfied for my second try with the S1RII.

But I think the lens helps also. The Sigma 70-200/2.8 is faster with AF than the Sigma 100-400. It has the label "sports" not by accident.

Great news!

BTW, I have been using AF-ON-NEAR and finding that the camera is less likely to focus on the background, even with subject recognition. In my case I was trying to track small birds running around on the ground in my lawn. Often I would get the grass behind the bird, but with AF-On-Near it seems to be better. Maybe. :)

I should be getting back to the velodrome on Thursday. Maybe do a dog park tomorrow.

Something that just occurred to me - perhaps Panasonic could add a "helmet" priority to human detection. After all, they have it for bike/motorcycle mode. BTW: I did put a helmet on and tried BIKE mode with HELMET priority while I was standing in front of the mirror, but no dice. It needs to see a bike first, apparently, which makes sense. But, if they could add this to human detection, that would be slick. I wonder if the "Urban Sports" mode does this.

That would be a real success for ice hockey, because all players wear a helmet.

But I am atm very positive on the AF capabilities of The S1RII, S1II and S1IIe. It can only get better. First, the more I test, the better the hit ratio will be. I am sure that me as a photographee can improve a lot, once you master the camera and the sport.

Second, Panasonic will bring many AF updates via firmware over the next 2 years. As far as I can see it, the difference between i.e. Sony and Panasonic is only the software. It is only a question of time until Panasonic brings their algorithms on par or better to Sony. It is now already so close.

Agreed on both points.
