Very nice. How do you find the AF performance on birds in flight? What is the keeper rate like?

My first attempt with the Sigma 150-600 in another place had been rather disappointing. But with the Sigma 500/5.6 the hit rate on this shooting was surprisingly high, about 90-95 %.
That's interesting. I've been considering replacing the 150-600 with the 500. Thanks for posting your experiences.

And, nice shots. If you are getting 90% hit rate on that kind of BIF, that's impressive indeed.

Last weekend I tried it with my Sigma 150-600 first time as well.
I have to give it another try, because I realized too late, that I made a mistake and the recognition mode was still on Human Body & Face... I switched to animal after a few hundred shots.
The it worked quite well, but most birds were gone by that time .

The 500 f5.6 needs to be really nice...

To be honest the black kites have been decoyed, so they came pretty close.

Well, it seems the S1RII does a wonderful job as it comes to "fast" AF and bird tracking.

Any experience with small songbirds in foliage? Loving the 500, but the s5ii leaves a lot to be desired with focusing.

I recently captured these images of a Bullock's Oriole with the S1RII, the Sigma 150-600, and the Sigma 1.4x TC. AFC, 10 fps, body (but not eye) animal detection. It did misfocus on some of the shots, but overall I was pretty happy. Click into the images to see the higher resolution versions on Smugmug.

Below is a frame-by-frame 40 FPS sequence in Smugmug of a Western Kingbird taking off. S1RII, animal body detect. Sigma 150-600. Used pre-cap. I'm pretty happy with the outcome. Not sure how the camera got set to F9; I thought it was wide-open. v1.2 firmware in the body, v1.3 in the lens.

One image from the sequence:

Hello everyone,
I'm very happy to be joining the Forum after reading this thread.
I share my passion for Leica and Hasselblad.
I just bought a Sigma 500mm 5.6 Pro and I have a Lumix S2RII on order.
I'd like to add a 1.4x (TC-1411) or 2x (TC-2011) converter for cases where the S1RII's 44MP crop is insufficient.
- My first question: Is the TC-2011 powerful enough for the SRII's 44MP, or is it better to stick to the TC1411?
- My second question: I usually use Leica APO R long lenses with a 7mm telescope eyepiece (focuser glued to a drilled rear cap) for planetary observation. These lenses are obviously manual AF. With the 500mm 5.6 Pro "without a camera," can I adjust my focus?
It depends on whether it's mechanical or electromagnetic. If so, I'd rather go for a TC-2011, which is more interesting for planetary observation.
(500x2)/7=142x!!! with the 7mm
or
(500x2)/12.5=80x!!! with the LEICA TO-R 12.5mm accessory.
I look forward to hearing your experiences and will be sure to share my experiences (landscapes, wildlife, street photography, painting reproductions, etc.).

Welcome. I just saw yesterday this nature photographer, Jeremy Neipp, using the S1R original with the Sigma 500mm f/5.6, and I really admire you, bird photographers.

The ending is a bit dramatic... SPOILER ALERT!!! (Sigma helped him to cover the cost of the lens).

Oh! Thanks for this very interesting link: animal photography, landscapes and wildlife, equipment, emotion...
I noticed the constant use of the x1.4... interesting, is the x2 less efficient (weight, loss of brightness, loss of comfort for the photographer and the camera (AF...))... and what's more, it's the 24MP camera! So if the x2 already penalizes the 24MP, it should disrupt the S1RII's 44MP even more, it seems to me...
What exactly do you think?

I don't know much about telecoverters, to be honest.
What 24mpx camera are you refering? Because the S1R original has 47mpx...

I've been using the 1.4x Sigma TC with the 150-600 DG DN on both the S1R and the S1RII and I'm reasonably happy. I think it would be even better with the 500/5.6, as the 500 is sharp wide-open, which puts you at F8 which keep diffraction from becoming too large a problem. Whilst the 150-600 likes to be stopped down a little on the long end, so you get F9 wide open with the 1.4x TC, and then I sort of feel the tug to stop down even more, but then you get deeper into diffraction, not to mention noise.

But, anyway, since you are asking about the 2x vs 1.4x on the 500/5.6, I have to say I have no experience with the 2x, although I find myself skeptical. One thing you should ask yourself is, are you able to correct diffraction in your workflow? I use Capture One and it has a "Diffraction" check-box, which does a reasonable job on the 4x MP sensors @F11, but still never quite gets you the detail see from larger apertures. But if you are considering the 2.0 TC, make sure you can correct for diffraction in post.

I'd suggest starting with the 1.4x, but who knows, the 2.0 might surprise me.

Good luck and welcome to the forum!

Many users are very happy with the TC2011 on the Sigma 70-200 F2.8, so it should be very good. But I have no personal experience between both TC's.
